The Emirates Racing Authority is pleased to announce a number of changes to the Pattern calendar with seven races upgraded in group status and three others becoming Listed.

The Al Quoz Sprint is one of nine races within the Dubai International Racing Carnival programme held at Meydan Racecourse to be upgraded and one of four to Group 2 level alongside the Al Rashidiya and the two races for fillies and mares, the Cape Verdi and the Balanchine.

The Abu Dhabi Championship, a thoroughbred turf race run over 2,200m at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club has risen from Listed to Group 3.

ERA Board member Mr Malih Lahej Al Basti said: “The quality of horses racing in the UAE, both locally-based and international, has substantially grown over the years and we are pleased the racing fixtures now reflect that calibre of competition.

The Carnival races continue to grow in strength and this has been mirrored at other racecourses and it is pleasing to see the elevation of the Abu Dhabi Championship at Abu Dhabi.”

Dubai Racing Club Chief Executive Officer Frank Gabriel Jr concluded: “The Al Quoz Sprint’s rise to Group 2 is pleasing as are the promotions of a number of our other races, adding further merit to the quality of horses coming to Dubai in the early part of the year.”

A record number of international horses will be arriving in Dubai in the coming days as the countdown continues to the start of the richest horseracing carnival in the world - the 2011 Dubai International Racing Carnival.

The eighth renewal, with total prize money of over US$37 million, opens at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday, January 13th with the US$200,000 first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge (Group 3).

The Dubai International Racing Carnival is spread over 11 racemeetings and culminates on March 26th, with the sixteenth running of the US$10 million Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline.

Following on from the success of the past editions of the Carnival, a large number of trainers have decided to return to Dubai with an increased number of horses for the 2011 Carnival.

“We couldn’t be happier with both the quality and quantity of horses that we have at the Carnival this year, not only those that have come from abroad but those stabled locally as well,’ said Dubai Racing Club CEO, Mr Frank Gabriel Jr.

“Since the Carnival began it has strengthened the racing scene in Dubai significantly and that was highlighted by Ali Rashid Al Raihe preparing Al Shemali to win the Dubai Duty Free last year.”

Returning trainers include Eduardo Martins, who has a team of six horses this time, John Gosden, Jerry Barton, Alain De Royer Dupre, Andre Fabre, Freddy Head, Mike de Kock, Herman Brown, Mick Channon, Mark Johnston, as well as Ed Dunlop and Luca Cumani.

American Ben Cecil will send horses to the Carnival for the first time with Crowded House and Ferneley arriving from the USA in the coming weeks.

De Kock and the UAE’s Saeed bin Suroor have fought close battles in all previous Carnivals and that looks set to continue with the South African bringing his largest team to Dubai.

Included in that team are last year’s Derby and Oaks winner Musir and Raihana whilst his new recruits include the Durban July winner Bold Silvano, South African Derby winner Irish Flame along with a number of quality three-year-olds including Zanzamar and Mahbooba.

Fellow South Africans Herman Brown has 2010 Al Fahidi Fort winner Bankable headlining his team, and Lucky Houdalakis comes for the first time, bringing with him one of the world’s top sprinters, JJ The Jet Plane.

Great Britain will be very well represented with the Cumani-trained team already settled in, having arrived in mid-December. Among the Cumani Carnival raiders is the multiple Group winner Presvis.

2010 Dubai World Cup winning trainer Pascal Bary is one of 10 French trainers heading to Dubai, along with Stephane Chevalier who has already enjoyed some local success during Meydan’s Winter and Spring Meets this season.

Rodolphe Collet, Xavier Nakkachdji, Francios Doumen, John Hammond, Mikel Delzangles, Alain De Royer Dupre and of course one of France’s most renowned trainers, Andre Fabre will all do their best to carry their flag high.

Jerry Barton, who is based in Saudi Arabia, has again set his sights on the Dubai International Racing Carnival with Deem, a consistent filly winner of both the 2009 Cape Verdi and 2010 Balanchine.

Dubai Racing Club is pleased to announce their long term partners, Emirates Airline, will be joining forces to sponsor the season’s opening racemeeting – the Meydan Winter Meet, set to take place on Thursday November 11.

This season, the Dubai Racing Club will operate a total of 20 racemeetings at Dubai’s premier racing facility, consisting of a six programme Winter Meet, a three programme Spring Meet, the 10 nights of the Dubai International Racing Carnival, and of course, the Dubai World Cup.

Ahmed Khoory, Emirates’ Senior Vice President Commercial Operations, GCC, Middle East & Iran commented: “Emirates is committed to the sport on a global level, sponsoring major races such as the Melbourne Cup, the Breeders’ Cup and Singapore Derby, as well as meets at Newmarket and York in the UK, however it is always very satisfying to support local events like the Winter Racing Challenge.

Meydan

“It is a great showcase for UAE-based talent, giving race fans the chance to gain an early insight into which horses to look out for this season, and - of course - signals the countdown to the Dubai World Cup, which we are once again proud to be the title sponsor of.”

Meydan's Chairman of the Board and CEO Saeed H Al Tayer added: "We are delighted to have our valued partners, Emirates Airline sponsoring the first race meeting of the new season. We thank them for their loyalty and commitment to racing and to Meydan. Our association dates back to the very first Dubai World Cup in 1996 and I hope our relationship continues to flourish for many years to come."

Emirates Airline is the generous sponsor this evening as horse racing action makes its eagerly awaited return to Meydan Racecourse. All six races are on the highly-acclaimed All – Weather surface, with one Purebred Arabian contest, the Wolgan Valley, a 1400m handicap, opening proceedings at 6.35pm.

The feature is the penultimate 1600m Emirates Holidays, and 11 will face the starter in a wide open contest. Former Champion Trainer Doug Watson saddles two with Shopton Lane looking the first string with Pat Dobbs booked to ride.

Rory Cleary will partner stable companion Fares and Watson said: “We made a nice start last week and hopefully can continue in good form. The racing does look very competitive though. Shopton Lane is well and pleasing us but you can never discount Fares.”

Meydan

Champion Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe is also doubly represented and Richard Hills will ride Aamaaq for his main employer, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, with stable jockey Royston Ffrench on Bermuda Rye who has to give weight all round.

Dahteer, for Dhruba Selvaratnam and William Buick, Hopes And Fears (Musabah Al Muhairi/Wayne Smith) and Ever Loved (Satish Seemar/Richard Mullen) are others to consider.

The following 1900m handicap, the Emirates Airline, is equally well contested and the Selvaratnam/Buick combination rely on Ans Bach who is an interesting runner if staying a trip he has yet to run over.
Watson and Dobbs combine with Dynamic Saint and the trainer said: “He has been a great servant to the yard and certainly retains plenty of ability. Hopefully he can run a big race.”
Erwan Charpy is triple-handed with Craigstown (Cleary), Mister Fasliyev (Supple) and Pascal (Hills) and all three would appear to hold good claims.

Gill Duffield is always feared in the Purebred Arabian field and saddles both Jawass (Cleary) and Estiqraar (Hills) in the opener. Eric Lemartinel and Philippe Barbe both enjoyed doubles at Abu Dhabi on Sunday and rely on Rafed and Marjan Al Asayl respectively.

The following 1400m maiden, Skywards, is an intriguing contest with Satish Seemar saddling four of the 14 runners. Mullen chooses to partner Saudi Summer and said: “It was a difficult choice. It looks a decent maiden and we will learn a lot about our four.”

Energia Central could be the one to beat though for Eduardo Martins.

The opening race of the new Meydan campaign was the 1400m Purebred Arabian handicap Wolgan Valley, and the progressive Af Amthaal made it five wins from ten starts. Now seven, he is trained by Bakhit Al Ketbi and has now won on turf, dirt and all-weather. Willie Supple was in the saddle and said: "He travelled nicely and was very brave when he needed to be. He is improving and very versatile with regard to underfoot conditions."

Champion Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe had surprisingly drawn a blank at the meetings at Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi last week but posted a quickfire double at the end of the night. The penultimate 1600m handicap, Emirates Holidays, the official feature on the card, was won by his Aamaaq with Richard Hills in the saddle for his main employer His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Hills always looked confident on the seven year old, settled in behind the fats early pace, who picked up nicely when the gap appeared 300m out. The pair ran on strongly and Hills was relieved: "We always liked this horse and it is great he has bounced back here. He seems to relish this surface and hopefully we can find another race for him."

Al Raihe was back in the winner's enclosure after the concluding 1900m Emirates Airline handicap which was won easily by Rochdale, providing the trainer's stable jockey Royston Ffrench with a first winner of the season.
Ffrench said: "Rochdale is a nice old horse who seldom runs a bad race. He has really enjoyed the all-weather and I was very happy turning for home. It is nice to get a winner and great the yard had two."

Saudi Summer made a winning racecourse debut in Skywards, a 1400m maiden, to the relief of stable jockey Richard Mullen who picked the right one from four Seemar runners. The jockey said: "That is a pleasing start to his career and he quickened nicely when I asked him. It was a nice performance and a relief to pick the right one!"

Seemar was another trainer in double form with apprentice Harry Bentley opening his UAE account on Reylaldothewizard in the 1200m Emirates Sky Cargo. Bentley timed his challenge to perfection, leading near the line on the lightly-raced four-year-old.

Bentley said: "It is a great opportunity to ride in Dubai and I am very grateful to all concerned. The horse picked up nicely and we knew he would be staying on."

Wayne Smith was another to pick the right one and won the 1400m Arabian Adventures on Always Emirates, trained by his main employer Musabah Al Muhairi. Never far off the pace, he picked up nicely turning for home and ran on strongly to land the spoils. Smith was delighted: "I was hoping for a big run as he has been training well on the new surface. The horses are in good form."

Racing returns to the UAE's flagship racecourse on Thursday evening with a six race card, sponsored by Meydan.

The Meydan Racecourse and Grandstand proved a great hit worldwide when first opened to the public in January and this season is staging 'domestic racing' for the first time. Tomorrow's meeting, the second of the 'Winter Meets' with an ultra competitive programme on the All-Weather surface, marks a step up in gear as the 2011 Dubai International Racing Carnival gets ever closer.

The featured 1600m conditions race, The Meydan Hotel, one of five Thoroughbred contests, has attracted the maximum field of 14 with the weights headed by the Dhruba Selvaratnam-trained Emmrooz on whom Kieren Fallon replaces stable jockey William Buick who is in Mauritius.

Meydan

Selvaratnam explained: "William is riding in a jockeys' challenge but Kieren is available and we all know what a good jockey he is. Emmrooz will come on for the run and has to give weight away but is in good form at home."

Former UAE Champion Trainer Doug Watson trains Prince Shaun who was last seen on Dubai World Cup night in the Al Quoz Sprint. He said: "That did not go to plan but he had a great season before that. He handles the surface well and has form over this far so we are hoping for a big run as he seems in good form." Prince Shaun is to be ridden by Pat Dobbs.

Aamaaq (Ali Rashid Al Raihe/Tadhg O'Shea) is a course and distance winner already this season but steps up markedly in class.

The same comment applies to stable companion Rochdale who also won at Meydan a fortnight ago. That was over 1900m but he steps up slightly to 2000m in the Meydan City Corporation, another conditions race. Dubai Twilight chased him home last time and re-opposes but Watson’s duo Quartier Latin (O'Shea) and Roman's Run (Dobbs) look bigger dangers and the trainer said: "Both are very capable of big runs and we have to be hopeful in a competitive little race."

Roman's Run was a 2010 Dubai International Racing Carnival winner for Watson as was Barbecue Eddie, who contests the concluding Meydan Grandstand Events,a 1200m handicap under O'Shea. The trainer said: "Conditions will suit but we could have been drawn better in a tough heat."

Dohasa, the mount of former multiple Champion Jockey Ted Durcan who makes his seasonal return, looks a big danger for trainer Ismail Mohammed but does have the worst of the draw. Al Raihe's Green Beret made a pleasing return to action at the first Meydan meeting and is another to consider.

Similarly, Energia Central was arguably unlucky not to win that night and will be hard to beat in the 1600m Meydan IMAX.

The only Purebred Arabian race is the opener, the 1600m Meydan Godolphin Parks which has attracted a field of seven. With Quite A Show and Royal Class both very capable performers, opening night winner Af Amthaal may have to raise his game under Willie Suple for trainer Bakhit Al Ketbi. He was chased home on that occasion by Rafed who re-opposes and for whom Durcan is an eye-catching booking.

Meydan today hosted His Excellency Senator Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang, President of Senate, Parliament of Malaysia at the Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse today. The delegation included several senators as well as the Consul General of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Dubai, Mr. Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.

The delegation is here to seek further knowledge in the industry, and given Meydan’s success on the international racing stage, the visit not only allowed a study of Meydan’s expertise in hosting international horseracing events, but also as its unique location for promoting sports, lifestyle, business and culture. The delegation also noted the viable economic returns that Meydan has contributed to with regards to supporting related industries for equine sports.

Meydan

Delegates were brought on an exclusive VIP tour of the Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse, the world’s largest integrated racing facility, and its Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) and hospitality facilities.

Chairman of the Board and CEO of Meydan Mr. Saeed Humaid Al Tayer said: “We are honoured to host the President of the Senate from the Parliament of Malaysia and the delegation. We look forward to the continued cross-cultural and enhanced Malaysia-Dubai ties, as we have had a strong working relationship with Malaysian consultants and suppliers not only for the Meydan project, but also moving forward, for the Tianjin Equine Culture City project in China. The Meydan Group is set to sponsor the third Winter Meet of the season this Thursday. Meydan Group’s Executive Chairman Saeed H Al Tayer said: “At Meydan, our priority is to provide top-class facilities to horsemen, corporate clients, avid racing followers and the just curious spectators alike. We aim offer the very best.

The valued support of all the racing enthusiasts who were with us at Nad Al Sheba and now Meydan Racecourse continues, and we welcome all to come and sample a night out with a difference”.

The six race-card is highlighted by the concluding 1900m Meydan “Farriers” handicap, the most valuable on the card. It looks wide open with 11 declared with Doug Watson represented by the trio of Weald (Pat Dobbs), Dr Faustus (Tadhg O'Shea) and Royal Prince (Rory Cleary).

The first named made a winning seasonal debut last year and clearly goes well fresh. A case can also be made for the other pair and Watson said: "All three are going well at home. It looks a competitive race but we should at least be competitive."

Swinging Sixties looks a nice addition to the Dhruba Selvaratnam string and he will be ridden by Kieren Fallon. The trainer said: "He will come on for the run but is working nicely. We hope he will be a useful Carnival performer for us."

Falcativ, Glen Nevis, Inestimable and Sunday Symphony all have strong claims in an open contest.

Selvaratnam's Dahteer should go close under Fallon in the preceding 1400m Meydan “Fizzy Nights” handicap after a very pleasing return to action. The trainer said: "He ran well first time and is a consistent type. The drop in trip should not be a concern."

Celtic King won very well at Jebel Ali on his seasonal bow but the handicapper acted accordingly and he looks high in the weights. Musabah Al Muhairi trains and stable jockey Wayne Smith said: "He was very good on the first day but this looks a lot tougher off his new rating. He works nicely on the surface though."

He also rides for Al Muhairi in the 1400m maiden, the Meydan “Shiba”. The pair combined last week to win a similar race with Zafeen Speed and this week's hope, Maath Gool, carries the same colours of Jaber Abdullah. Smith added: "They ran in the same race the first week and both ran well. We should not be far away."

Satish Seemar has made a great start to the season and saddles three including debutant Meiotic, the choice of Richard Mullen. Stable companion Techniques of War is considered, while Dahes is ultra-consistent and guaranteed to run a solid race. He is trained by Ali Rashid Al Raihe whose AB Include looks the most likely winner of the 1200m Meydan “Prime”, while Selvaratnam's Canwinn should make a bold effort in the 1600m Meydan Golf Course.

The only Purebred Arabian contest is the opening 1600m Meydan Business Park, and eight have been declared. It looks a quality race with the Gill Duffield-trained AF Alghabra returning to action. Tadhg O'Shea won four times on her last year and said: "She was brilliant last year; really gutsy and improved throughout the season. She works well on the surface so can hopefully run a big race."

Rafed has been second and third already this season and Ted Durcan rides for Eric Lemartinel, while Sarabella won her only start to date. Michael Kettle trains Sama Bu Dhabi who looks a big danger to all.

Meydan's third meeting of the new season was highlighted by the concluding 1900m Meydan “Farriers” and Frenchman Stephane Chevalier opened his account for the season, as did former Champion Jockey Ted Durcan, when Lando Junior led close home to deny Swinging Sixties.

Chevalier was delighted: "I have had many good times in Dubai as assistant to Ian Jory and Jerry Barton and it is great to have a winner myself.

I must thank the owners and Ted who has given him a great ride."

Wayne Smith and the Musabah Al Muhairi-trained Always Emirates won the 1200m Meydan “Prime” to follow-up their first night victory over 1400m. Drawn one, Smith was able to track the pace before kicking for home 400m out. They fought out a finish with AB Include but just prevailed to Smith's delight.

He said: "It was a brave effort and he is a nice horse in this grade.

He has had a few problems but is running well."

Trainer and jockey doubled up when Maath Gool ran out the convincing winner of the 1400m maiden, the Meydan “Shiba”. Having only his second start, the three year-old son of Dubawi was always travelling nicely and quickened clear 200m out. Smith said: "He is a nice young horse with very low mileage. Hopefully he can progress."

The pair were narrowly denied a treble when Tayyab was caught on the line in the 1600m Meydan Golf Course handicap by the fast finishing Game Stalker. He is trained by Ali Rashid Al Raihe and ridden by Ahmed Ajtebi and the Emirati pair were delighted to combine for a victory when celebrating National Day.

Ajtebi said: "It is great to win for Ali at this time of year. We finished very quickly and I was hopeful we had just prevailed.

ERA

"

Satish Seemar has made a flying start to the season and stable jockey Richard Mullen was in the saddle on Montmorency who won the 1400m Meydan “Fizzy Nigghts” in good style. Always handy, Mullen kicked his charge clear turning for home and they were never going to be caught.

Mullen said: "He is a nice horse and was always going well in front. I knew he would stay all the way to the line and it has been a good start to the season.

Racing opened with the only Purebred Arabian race on the night, a 1600m Meydan Business Park, and the Gill Duffield-trained AF Alghabra won her fifth race on the trot – all under Tadhg O'Shea.

Unbeaten in four starts last season, she opened her seasonal and Meydan account in style and the jockey said: "She is a bonny mare and a real credit to everyone concerned. She is hopefully still improving."
